Terra Branford

Final Fantasy VI

Voice:

Yukari Fukui/Natalie Lander

Concept:

Magic Master (Japanese) / Esperkin (English)

A girl blessed - or cursed - with both the power of espers and incredible magic. Her attacks are generally magic in nature, but she can strike an enemy with both long and short-range blows. In the original game, she was manipulated by the Gestahlian Empire to take advantage of her magical powers. She escaped the Empire's control after telepathically communicating with an esper in the mining city of Narshe, and joined a rebel faction known as the Returners. This ultimately marked the beginning of a long battle to save their world.

How to Unlock Edit

As a heroine for Cosmos, Terra is unlocked from the beginning.

AppearanceEdit

Terra's appearance is taken straight from art drawn by Amano. As such, she appears as a fair-skinned, delicate young woman with curly blond hair tied up. She is dressed in a sleeveless red dress with flower-like patterns, long red gloves with similar patterns, a bright, a multi-shaded sash around her waist and white tights. Like many protagonists, she wears a flowing cape, hers a bright pink with tassels at the end. Unlike most protagonists, she wears no piece of armor whatsoever on her person.

Alternate Look Edit

  • Emerald Locks - For 300PP, Terra's hair color changes to green much like her original sprite. The top of

her cloak is colored purple to replicate the shoulder pads from said sprite and it loses it's floral pattern. She also is not wearing tights and her dress and shoes are a deeper shade of red.
  • Narshean Princess - In Dissidia 012, Terra gains a new costume based directly off of another of her concepts drawn by Amano, replacing her red with shades of blue, a vest, translucent sleeves, bare legs and a winged shoulder pad. Her EX Mode is recolored to a green tint.

Abilities Edit

Terra's fighting style is known as Esperkin. Her attacks consist of different elementally aligned magic spells. Smashing opponents with ice and launching them with fiery explosions fills out her arsenal of magic, giving her plenty of ground, air, and short and long-range attacks, but leaves her little room in the way of melee attacks.

Brave AttacksEdit

Brave Attacks
Japanese Name Translation Level Type CP AP Notes
ファイア Fire Initial Ground 20 120 Sends a small ember of fire crawling across the ground. Explodes on impact, sending the target flying into the air which allows you to enter Chase mode. In EX-Mode, two of this are sent over.
ブリザラ(地上) Blizzara (Ground) Level 13 Ground 30 180 Fires a large ice berg at the target that travels at high speed, if it connects, it breaks up into small shards that deals two additional hits sending the enemy into a Wall Rush. In EX-Mode, two blocks of ice are fired. Weak block effect while creating the ice berg.
ブリザラコンボ(地上) Blizzara (Ground Combo) Level 19 Ground 30 180 A three-hit, close-range combo attack that ends with the target getting thrown back into a Wall Rush. Extremely quick execution. In EX-Mode, this will deal one more additional hit before the final blow.
グラビガ Graviga Level 33 Ground 30 180 A sphere of gravity is formed over the enemy after which is dropped upon them, forcefully shoving them into the ground for possible Wall Rush damage. Sphere has a minor absorb effect which absorbs nearby EX-Force into it as well. This technique has a long casting time but allows Terra to move while casting. In EX-Mode, two Graviga orbs are created without the need to repeat the casting.
メテオ Meteor Level 42 Ground 30 180 Randomly showers the area around the enemy with orbs of blaze. In EX-Mode: instantly casts another set of Meteor if O button is pressed again.
ブリザラコンボ(空中) Blizzara Combo (Air) Initial Air 30 140 A three-hit, close-range combo aerial attack that ends with the target getting thrown back into a Wall Rush. Extremely quick execution. In EX-Mode, this will deal one more additional hit before the final blow.
ブリザラ(空中) Blizzara (Air) Initial Air 30 140 Fires a large ice berg at the target that travels at high speed, if it connects, it breaks up into small shards that deals two additional hits sending the enemy into a Wall Rush. In EX-Mode, two blocks of ice are fired. Weak block effect while creating the ice berg.
ザンダラ Thundara Level 8 Air 20 90 Four columns of electricity form around the target and closes in on them. Casts twice in EX-Mode.
ホーリー Holy Level 10 Air 20 140 Shoots four spheres of light at the target that homes with a high speed that slows down after a while, if any of it connects a hit, you're able to enter Chase mode.
ホーリーコンボ Holy Combo Level 28 Air 30 200 Similar to Holy, however if you push the O button when you're prompted to enter Chase mode, Terra will fire off bullets of Flare which if hits, chains into Ultima(if learned). In EX-Mode, Holy is used twice and Flare can be fired as many times as desired during the interval between using Holy and Ultima(if used). Terra is able to move while casting Flare at a slow speed.

HP AttacksEdit

HP Attacks
Japanese Name Translation Level Type CP AP Notes
フラッド Flood Initial Ground 40 180 Geysers of water erupt from underneath the target two to three times. Guard Crush. If in EX-Mode, another set of Flood will begin after the first geyser of the previous Flood erupts. This sums up to a total of 6 continuous eruptions, with no interval between any.
トルネ(地上) Tornado (Ground) Level 23 Ground 40 180 Terra swirls while causing a violent gale around her, pulling the enemy and deals constant BRV damage to him and eventually throws the target upwards for a possible Wall Rush. If used in EX-Mode, Terra can chain two set of tornadoes before ending it with a HP attack.
トルネ(空中) Tornado Initial Air 40 180 Same as ground version.
メルトン Meltdown Level 51 Air 40 300 Releases a large ball of heat with three stages that explodes upon impact or after a duration of time. First stage is when there is little or no charge, which releases a fast and short ranged fire ball with no homing capability. Stage two(where Terra's hands glow blue and exclaims: "This is power") releases a slow Meltdown that speeds up while tracking the target, mid-range. The final stage blasts off a fire ball that rockets and ricochets around the map that travels an insane distance but has weak homing ability. Charging it up to stage two and three results in a longer recovery time. If Meltdown hits, the target is knocked back for a great distance, possibly into a Wall Rush. Meltdown can be deflected by some top-tier attacks and spells such as Braver, Tornado itself, [Wrath] Particle Beam(will cause Cloud of Darkness to stagger), most blocks of Exdeath, Octaslash, Havoc Wing, Rough Divide and some others. In EX-Mode, after releasing Meltdown, pressing the Square button again will instantly fire off a phase 3 Meltdown regardless whichever phase of Meltdown was fired off previously.

Warning: Meltdown can and will damage Terra with her own BRV value if deflected back to her, especially phase two where it'll home her.

アルテマ Ultima Derived Air 40 300 Chained after Holy Combo if Square button is pushed instead of entering Chase mode. Generates pure light at the location where the enemy is at which deals constant BRV damage and eventually implodes into a large explosion. In EX-Mode, Ultima can be chained twice after Flare from Holy Combo. If used when enemy is close to a wall, he'll be slammed into a Wall Rush.

Useful TipsEdit

Terra works best in mid-range and airborne because of her lack of close range techniques, large charge up times(such as Meltdown which renders her helpless during it) and because her stronger attacks being available only in air. However, if you stray too far from the opponent, you'll find that her attacks will not reach him except for Holy, which slows down after a period of chasing. Always keep Blizzara(Combo[Aerial Recommended]) in her arsenal as it's her ONLY melee attack, which can be used to push enemies away because of it's large knock back distance if they get too close.

Most of her HP attacks crush defenses, and one of her best moves would be her Tornado attack which surrounds herself with three rotating tornados which are able to protect her from all bravery and HP attacks, especially all the projectile-type attacks and deflect them towards the aggressor. Tornado also defends against some melee HP attacks, such as Cloud's Braver and Squall's Rough Divide, which causes both sides to stagger for a moment(as when dashing into each other). Not to mention, her Tornado spell gives off a warning sign and makes the approaching enemy back off, but use sparingly as it has a period of vulnerability right after the three tornadoes form into one.

Charging Meltdown to it's second phase, where it moves at a moderate speed and homes strongly, then using Holy right after the Meltdown connects a hit, will allow you to instantly trigger the Flare Combo even if the Holy attacks don't connect, allowing you to chain to her other HP attack, Ultima if any of the Flare hits. This allows you to deal massive damage bravery and HP wise, however, do be warned that it does not always work. Note that Meltdown deals damage if enemies are caught in it's explosion even if they were not hit by the fireball itself, meaning it's first and second stage can hit enemies with strong blocks(such as Exdeath and Cloud of Darkness), however the third stage will just bounce off their block as though it was a wall.

Her Meteor move is also extremely useful with her HP attack Flood. Use Meteor on the enemy and if any of the final few Meteors hit him, instantly use Flood and it'll hit most of the time because of the [Feint] status. Meltdown is also very helpful in small and limited maps, such as Pandaemonium and Kefka's Tower, where if charged to it's maximum, will cause the giant fireball to rocket and ricochet around the room giving it more chances to hit the enemy.

During EX-Mode, Graviga can also be cast twice consecutively without the requirement to re-do the cast time for the second cast, and this can be done over and over dealing massive damage as long as enemy is hit by the first Graviga.

Terra's play style is known as the Esperkin, where her spells are always targeted on the enemy as long as they're in range. Even if the enemy is out of sight or behind walls, most of her spells will still hit the enemy, giving Terra a big advantage in maps with many walls to hide behind. Spells such as Meteor, Graviga, Thundaga, Flood will hit as long as in range.

Naming ControversyEdit

There is much debate between the name Tina Branford and Terra Branford among the community. While Tina Branford was Tina/Terra's original name in the Japanese release of Final Fantasy VI, her name was translated into Terra Branford by Ted Woolsey in the western release of Final Fantasy VI.

Several other cases also include Cain/Kain Highwind, Frioniel/Firion, Butz/Bartz Klauser and to some extent, Aeris/Aerith Gainsborough.

TriviaEdit

  • Terra's board piece depicts her in a different pose, unlike the rest of the heroes, who possess the same pose shown on their artwork.
  • Terra is the only Warrior of Cosmos who can glide
