Final Fantasy I

Japanese Voice:

Kenji Utsumi

English voice:

Christopher Sabat

Concept:

Reverse Standard (Japanese) / Nemesis (English)

Out of all the Chaos characters, he is the most standardized. His attacks are slow but have high knockback and priority.

AppearanceEdit

Unlike every other character to appear in the series, with the exception of Cosmos, Garland's design is entirely original as there were no concept pieces drawn by Amano, only working with the existing sprites. He is adorned in heavy silver armor with claw-like gauntlets and decorated cyan jewels along with a flowing purple cape. The appearance is completed by a demonic-looking helmet with long horns not unlike Chaos'.

Alternate appearanceEdit

  • Stalwart's Armor - Color swaps his armor and cape to reddish hues, resembling his sprite from the PSP remake of Final Fantasy.
  • Discord Incarnate - A second costume based on concept art by Yoshitaka Amano. Stripped of his armor, Garland resembles a demon with black skin, claws and talons, long white hair and featureless eyes. He sports a crown with multitude of horns on his head. His sword is also redesigned to look slightly trimmed and cracking at the seams. In EX Mode, his body becomes a lighter shade and his sword becomes black with magma glowing through the seams.

Abilities Edit

Garland's style is referred to as Nemesis. His play style is focused on crushing and pulverizing his opponents with his mighty sword using slow, but devastating attacks. Garland's weapon has the ability to change into a multitude of forms, ranging from an axe, dual blades and a chain whip, allowing him to attack in all ranges. His HP attacks consists of powerful, wide reaching magic attacks. Garland is mainly plagued by his sluggish speed, dragging his heavy sword along the ground, though, the weight of his weapon allows for easy Wall Rush opportunities, especially with the Bardiche Brave Attack .

Garland's Brave Attacks Edit

ラウンドエッジ Round Edge Lame circulaire Initial Ground 30->15 120 Garland spins forward in a circle to hit the opponent twice, then brings his sword down. If you hit "Circle" before the last hit connects, Garland will swing his sword upwards which is now an axe. If you hit "Circle" after the last hit connects, Garland will use the dual blades to strike his opponent with a four-hit combo.
ランスバレット Lance Bullet Charge de lance 8 Ground 30->15 120 Garland lengthens each section of his sword which is now a lance. He then charges forward impaling the opponent. If it hits, Garland will jump and swing his sword, which is now an axe, downwards.

Garland's HP Attacks Edit

HP Attacks
Japanese Name English Name French Name Level Type CP AP Notes
じしん EarthQuake Séisme Initial Ground 40->20 180 Garland smashes his sword into the ground causing the ground to erupt. If this move is performed at a ledge, the stone spikes will appear at the next lower ground. However, if used at a ledge with a bottomless pit where the EarthQuake would land, it doesn't appear, thus causing you to become vulnerable during the recovery time.
ほのお Blaze Flammes 13 Ground 40->20 180 Garland splits his sword into two and spins both pieces in the air. The swords then shoot out 4 Blaze projectiles each. The projectiles gain greater homing the further out they proceed. Conventional running away from the attack actually almost always causes it to land a hit. Hiding behind obsticles or dodging right through the attack, perhaps even towards Garland himself to attempt an attack, or feint one are good tactics.
つなみ Tsunami Tsunami 38 Ground 40->20 180 Garland jumps up and throw his sword with a chain onto the floor. The sword then curls around the floor like a snake, leaving behind a line of water for a short distance. The sword then explodes in a water explosion somewhat like Tina's Flood attack. If the sword successfully connects on the opponent, this causes the opponent to be caught up in the flurry of Brave attacks, finalizing with the eruption of water causing HP damage. On the flip-side, missing with Tsunami can open you up to punishment.
ほのお Blaze Flammes Initial Air 40->20 180 Garland splits his sword into two and spins both pieces in the air.
たつまき Cyclone Cyclone 30 Air 40->20 180 Garland swings his blade and creates two gigantic Tornados, which proceed forward, or if the enemy is not directly in front of them, have weak homing. The Tornadoes move slowly but can reflect almost any kind of projectile or attack. Tornado may also be used as a form of trap, letting them loose and then attacking in certain directions, causing your opponent to evade this later attack, leading them right into the Tornado.

Equipment Edit

Garland can wield giant swords, polearms, axes and katana. He can also wear light and heavy armor as well as gauntlets, shields and helms.

Trivia Edit

  • When Garland talks to Chaos, Garland refers to the events that occurs in Final Fantasy 1 as he talks about how the warrior(s) of light nearly killed him. He is then sent 2,000 years in the past, when the warrior(s) of light go 2000 years in the past, facing all previous main bosses, and later facing Garland again as he talks about how he is here, and then transforms into Chaos.
  • Garland along with Gabranth are the only villains not to morph during Ex Mode.
  • The supposed 'armor changes' in Garland's EX Mode are actually misplaced texture areas. This is remedied in his alternate costume and in the official renders, oddly.
